With Fashion Weeks hitting the globe, from Milan and Paris, to even our own little New Zealand, I felt a bit inspired to blog about the up and coming trends that we are seeing on the catwalks ...
But first, let me introduce you to my new favourite designer of all time - Alice McCall. Her SS07 collection shown at NZ Fashion Week is amazingly feminine, cute and playful, while at the same time being extremely modern and smart. I love the colours and fabrics she uses, but most of all I love how all of her outfits are extremely well cut. There are no freaky fly-away bits like Annah Stretton, it's just all very simple and elegant. I like it.
I’d also like to congratulate Trelise Cooper for being one of very few designers in the world who can currently pull off polka dots. As cute as they are, some designers just can’t seem to make them look good, and instead make then horrendously cheap and tacky. All the outfits below are extremely well put together, the dots are subtle, and match beautifully with the rest of the colour palette.
Another favourite NZ label that I’ve picked up during NZ Fashion Week is
EDGE. Everything in their collection is so simple and basic, yet it’s all so wearable and elegant and pretty. Everything is so floaty and summery … I wouldn’t mind if the whole of Wellington was seen in this collection. Their fabrics are beautiful too, very subtle, and modest. I like it a lot.
I also must say that I like NZ label
Insidious Fix a lot, despite from their head designer being convicted of growing marijuana, you can’t deny the fact that this guy has talent. These photos are from last season’s summer range, but don’t you think they would still fit in perfectly this season? From the cuffed plaid shorts, to the cute little pastel prints … I just think Insidious Fix has the ability to predict fashion trends of the future, their last range also included a lot of bows which I think is quite cool …
Now according to runwayreporter.co.nz
Bows are going to be huge this season. This is a bit predictable as femininity is coming back into fashion (summer dresses, floaty fabrics, floral prints etc). I love bows, so this is great news. I especially love the ones made from satin, as they kind of float, and mould to the garment. Very elegant.
Cropped Jackets are also supposed to be big this season. Not sure why, as they generally tend to only look good on skinny people. Perhaps they’re coming back in, as they allow designers to accentuate bow details, and also draw more attention to the waist, giving a more ‘hourglass’ silhouette. Again, femininity is coming back in.
The silhouette is drastically changing this season, so expect many high waists! It’s a kind of belated fashion trend, as they’ve been saying this for about 3 years. But nevertheless, its here. :) Awesome.
Also must mention here that new NZ label Cherry Cotton Candy does some really teen, street-friendly stuff. It’s all very pretty and girly, while being very edgy and rockish at the same time. Its also very innocent … I can’t quite describe the look of this label, but its very cool. However, sometimes I feel that it’s just blatantly ripping off Asian styles, but oh well. Whatever.
Coats are big this season too, especially ones resembling capes! Another trend emerging is a love for all things British. From the burberry plaid print, to old school capes, anything British seems to be ‘cool’ this year.
So
Plaids are going to be big this season too. I’m glad, I’m sick of the whole polka dot and stripes ensemble. I love stripes, but they’re being a bit overdone by those little 12 year olds and their Jay Jays hoodies don’t you think? Plaids are a bit more retro, different, and there’s so much more variety you can get out of a plaid pattern. I especially love the dresses below, they’re all so pretty.
Gold is also supposed to be big this summer. I’m not where it all fits in, but this dress by
Cybele is definitely very cool. Perhaps it’s a fashion statement negating all the femininity and modesty that’s coming back into fashion, with something a bit more bold and daring.
Red is apparently big this season too (going along with the Scottish plaid theme) … I’ve always liked red so I don’t really have much to comment on here. Cool dress by
Deborah Sweeney though. Awesome cut.
Also must say that summer dresses are my favourite thing at the moment. Anything pretty and floaty gets my seal of approval. I love the summer dresses below, they’re all so amazing.
This one by
Kate Sylvester is really great. It has a simple shape, which allows it to be a bit more daring with colour. So it’s extremely colourful and eye-catching, which is always a plus, but it doesn’t overdo it, thanks to the simplicity of the fabric’s pattern. :)
I also LOVE this dress by
Madame Hawk. It’s so yellow and pretty. I love everything about it. *swoon*
This
Helen Cherry dress is basically the most amazing dress I’ve seen in my life. I wanted to wear it to my ball … buuuutt … lets not even go there. It’s just so simple and elegant, yet edgy. You could see it parading down a
Versace catwalk, it’s just THAT amazing. Must rip it off one day.
This dress by
Sample Only is also very cool. I don’t know what it is, the colour? The attention to detail? The photo? I don’t know, its just a very cool dress. :)
